Strolling around the AL No Guts team stats...

View Stats

Starting at the bottom, Team 8 that is (will I ever have the AL team numbers memorized?). Carl's Highway Kind. Carl must have just held a closed door meeting with his team because Aubrey Huff and Jason Giambi are now riding the pine! Sometimes it's good to bench good players who are having tough years. Carl just needs to make sure if they get hot to get them back in there.  Bartolo "spastic" Colon is now out of the rotation too. That's probably a good idea for now. An obvious weakness appears to be the bullpen. Outside of Tom Gordon and Bleeding Nostrils Donnelly, the rest of the pen has an ERA of 5.50 or higher. Ugh. Amusing stats: team stolen bases, 1, attempts, 2, 12 sacrifice hits in 92 games. Call Joe Morgan! AAA watch - Hugh Jass, C with 67 AB; Oliver Klossov, P with 41 IP of 8.27 ERA and a win vs two losses. I think the win was against me.

Moving up we get to Slave, Team 7: Bingo's Fuzzy Puppies. The first thing I notice is he has an All-Star middle infield of Ronnie Belliard and Carlos Guillen on the bench with .377 and .397 batting averages, respectively. With A-Rod at SS, the obvious move seems to be to shift him over to 3B and shift 3B Joe Crede's .218 and 2B Desi Relaford's .192 to the bench. Is there a place for Melvin Mora? Maybe in the OF over a struggling Jacque Jones. Those moves should really boost the offense. With Benito Santiago down and John Olerud released that reduces Slave's bench to the aforementioned Belliard, Guillen, Mora and Bobby Kielty. Jeez that's not a lot of guys. Amusing stats: Javier Vazquez is 5-9 despite a 3.55 ERA and 4.6 runs of support. Guess it's feast or famine for JV. Billy Koch is 5-3 despite a 5.95 ERA, practically Ashbyesque. AAA watch - a mere 11 AB for Hugh Jass despite Slave only having 1 active catcher.

Team 6 is Randy's TriBonds, the Forster leader for much of the season. The return of Eric Chavez coincides with the departure of Frank Thomas. The offensive machine should keep clicking though, since Raul Ibanez can slide into the DH spot. It's basically a loss in walks as Ibanez slugs along with the Big Hurt but doesn't have his batting eye. The TriBonds bench is a fairly ugly assortment: Randy Winn, Travis Lee, Enrique Wilson, Miguel Cairo, Brandon Inge, Tony Womack, Greg Norton, Willie Bloomquist, and John Flaherty. Even Frank Catalanatto is having an off year. And no, I'm not sold on Brandon Inge suddenly learning how to hit, though I think he is useful to own. It appears Randy only has five active starters right now in Brad Radke, Jason Johnson, Jason Davis, Darrell May, and Kenny Rogers and will have to hope none of them get injured over the second half of the year. Amusing stats: Mariano Rivera's 0-2 with a 1.07 ERA while Shigetoshi "Game Over" Hasegawa is 4-2 with a 7.05. That's probably due to Mo pitching the final innings without the TriBonds big offense getting a chance after he's done. Team sacrifice attempts 7, 6 by Inge and Darin Erstad. AAA watch - 6 AB from Jass, 10 IP from Klossov.

Team 5, the Errant Shadows, have a walking problem for Matt it seems. Jason Varitek has the highest OBA for the regular players at .369. No one else on the team has walked more than 35 times. Matt's team may be last among "active" teams (see next entry) but only has 3 team walks less than Carl "Moneyball" Zimring. Odd that it stood out to me here but not on Carl's stats. Matt seems to be doing a good bit of shuffling of the lineup as 16 players have gotten 100 plate appearances or more. I'm not sure what Kevin Millar did to offend Matt but his .366 OBA and .396 SLG (ooo maybe that was it?) seem to outclass new cleanup hitter 1B Ken Harvey's .272 OBA and .311 SLG. Matt seems to be getting an efficient use out of his bullpen, too with only 7 guys appearing all year, anchored by Joe Nathan and Eddie Guardado. Amusing stats: Kevin Brown has only missed 5 starts? AAA watch - nothing of significance. Good job, Matt.

The Wookies. Ah, the Wookies. Good ol' Team 4. Good ol' Jeff's Wookies. Maybe it's best to begin with the AAA watch. 29 AB for Jass, 54 innings for Klossov including 3 starts, 13 AB for Mike Rotch, OF-1B, and 133 At Bats for Ollie Tabooger, IF! This team's a mess. Jeff has a real lot of players in the minor leagues but at some point he is going to have to get some major league players on his roster, even if they aren't stars. One part of "playing for the future" is having major league players of young age and there are always veterans around to fill out a team. It also doesn't look like the Wookies have turned in a batting lineup yet, as their stats don't show up in the team starters section of the weekly report. Outlook bleak. Amusing stats: 12 guys have started for the Wookies so far this year.

Team 3 is Byrd Hall's Whistles Go Woo. Byrd has not been very involved with his new team which doesn't really bode well for its future. I thought they'd be crushing the league with offense and indeed they are 3rd in offense but their pitching is 3rd from the bottom and is driving them into last place again. CC Sabathia has a sub-4 ERA  but is 3-9. Gil Meche has been absolutely terrible with a 7.63 ERA. It seems like the rotation could use some Bronson Arroyo and his 3.12 ERA. This small change would likely make a big difference. But Byrd would have to care. Nomar replacing Cristian Guzman will be a lift as well. Amusing stats: what the hell is up with Carlos Delgado?? .206 BA, .293 OBA, .382 SLG. Isn't he in a contract year?? AAA watch - 53 ABs for Jass, 12 for Tabooger, 7.2 IP for Klossov.

My own troubles, those of Team 2, the Burninators can be summed up briefly: how did I wind up with every relief pitcher who suddenly can't even reach the lowest levels of his previous performance. Otherwise solid guys: Chad Bradford, Julio Mateo, David Riske, Rafael Betancourt,  and Kerry Ligtenberg have alll been consistently flammable. This team has blown 7 games after a 7 inning lead. Picking up Francisco Cordero helped stem the bleeding, but still. The rotation as is can't bear the loss of both Tim Hudson and Roy Halladay. Carlos Silva and Scott Schoenweiss getting starts every week is a frightening proposition. The batters all seem to be getting in and out like Baby Kitty. 19 guys - that's right - have appeared in more than 10 games so far. Amusing stats: Carlos Beltran has grounded into 12 double plays. Maybe if he was fast he could beat some of those out. Julio Lugo is the only player to appear in 40 games or more without a sacrifice. Isn't that what shortstops are for? AAA watch - nothing of significance.

Finally, Team 1, the Cursed Bambinos are riding high. Ken's trade with Slave that got him Manny Ramirez and Curt Schilling and Bobby Crosby for A-Rod and Johnny Damon has really paid off. Manny is carrying the offense and Schilling combined with Mark Mulder have been devastating. Though much like the Burninators, this team has been betrayed by its bullpen with 8 games lost after leading through 7. Out of short relievers, only 3 guys have 20 IP or more.  Injuries to BJ Kim, Ben Weber, and JC Romero have forced Pat Hentgen and Brian Anderson have a huge number of late inning relief appearances. Those guys, with their respective ERAs of 6.38 and 7.22 are probably the culprits though they each have .500 W-L records. Ken probably needs to address this. Amusing stats: Scott Spezio starting over Casey Blake? Spezio: .278 OBA, .342 SLG; Blake: .352 OBA, .464 SLG. AAA watch - 4.1 innings for Klossov. Not much.
