Fox Hates Baseball

Every year about this time, I get the unwelcome reminder of what little interest Fox has in anything other than cashing in on a guaranteed audience share. The All-Star Game is a preview of the "fun" to be had come playoff time (at least when the Yankees are playing since Fox doesn't care about any other teams).

To begin with, I guess they are using the Fox NFL music now for baseball games. They probably think that viewers' endorphins will fire up upon hearing that and then not switch over to America's Got Talent, which coincidentally I did often last night because my friends were on it - set up to fail and be laughed at - but on it nonetheless.

The initially led into a story line of having to be careful where they sat during the game because of all the home runs launched during the Home Run Hitting Contest, which is the worst event in baseball. They had a point though because, really, a baseball game is just like a Home Run Hitting Contest when a batting practice pitcher grooves straight 80 mph fastballs down the center of the plate. That's why there are always 50 to 60 home runs hit in every baseball game. So, you know, good opener.

Then they went on throughout the broadcast to talk about everything other than the game. Whether its "wacky" relief pitchers Heath Bell and Brian Wilson doing those "nutty things" they do all the time because it is part of their lovable personalities and not because they only have to pitch 60 innings a year or its "Stand Up Against Cancer" like cancer is some kind of schoolyard bully and all we have to do is unite as one and tell it go away. Can we "Stand Up Against Joe Buck"? The kid who Heath Bell decided to have a fun "on-camera" impromptu moment with seemed to have no idea where he was at. He was in the front row of the All-Star Game. He didn't have a favorite team or a favorite player. He asked for an autograph but Bell said he can't give them during the game but instead gave him his Yoda backpack which was full of pre-autographed things. The kid seemed totally not into it.

In the meanwhile, Prince Fielder won the game with a 3-run jack so that was awesome. The Brewers are tied for first which is awesome. They also just got K-Rod which... I don't know how I feel about it. His bad year is two years away now. I don't know if he is still getting into domestic disputes. I guess this can only be an upgrade. Kam Loe has just been awful lately and needs to get back to pitching in situations. Roenicke seems to like to have an "8th inning guy" so hopefully K-Rod can suck it up and be that guy.

Lastly, check out this story my friend Carl sent me. It's totally crazy. An entire "pro" team practically shoved out the door. Also, a reference to someone "making a farce of the game."
