Magic Number: 9, Games Remaining: 14

The Crew is off tonight, so I listened to the KMOX broadcast of Cardinals and Pirates. Joel Hanrahan could not get major league hitters out. Fortunately, the Cardinals sent up Corey Patterson to hit with two outs in the ninth and the tying run on third and go-ahead run on second.

The Cardinals broadcast has a certain sense of entitlement to it. They talk about the Pirates in terms like "teams like the Pirates don't have anything to lose" and "teams like the Pirates, you don't want to keep them close in games."

I haven't heard the Brewers broadcasters talk like this. Basically, the message is that if the Cardinals lose, it's their fault because the Cardinals should never ever lose to the Pirates. This is disproven basically every single day in baseball. Baseball doesn't work like this, but why should that stop generic, boring broadcasters from repeating the same things all the time.

I don't think I can stand listening to Mike Shannon for another game. He has all that old-timey dumbness that many veteran broadcasters have with none of the charm of a Uecker or Ron Santo.
